What GPA and ACT/SAT score would put someone in an "auto-reject" zone for top 25 schools?

ree

Top 25 universities in the United States use what we call an "academic index" in order to measure an application's strength purely based on numbers. The academic index takes an applicant's GPA, class rank, and all standardized examination scores to produce a number on a scale of 1-9. For example, a student with an academic index of 9 would have 4.0 GPA, Class Rank of 1, and SAT score of 1600 and SAT2 Subject Test scores of 800 and 800. A candidate would be considered a strong applicant if he or she has an academic index of 7 or higher. If you are curious, you can calculate your academic index at www.satscores.us.

As for the auto-reject zone, a candidate with an academic index of 4 or lower would probably be considered a "weak" candidate (purely in terms of numbers), although this differs case by case. However, unofficially, having lower than a 1400 SAT/30 ACT , having a GPA of lower than 3.8 or having any AP score lower than 5 would mean you have virtually no chance. Keep in mind the majority of students admitted have 1500 or higher on the SAT/34 or higher on the ACT and a GPA of 4.0 unweighted. The exception would be if your dad is Bill Gates and donated a new building, or if you couldn't focus on school because you've won your state championship for a given sport.
